Alder supported Natel Energy’s desire to raise awareness of the once-in-generation opportunity to modernize hydropower and protect the fish living beneath the water’s surface.
Alder targeted My Climate Journey, the highly respected platform for climate tech leaders, innovators and investors, to tell this important story.
Hydropower is key to a zero-carbon grid, supplying 40% of U.S. renewable electricity, but its impact on migratory fish is a major challenge. Traditional turbines kill 1 in 5 fish, contributing to an 81% decline in migratory species since 1970. Existing fish protection methods are costly, inefficient, and difficult to maintain.
With over half of North America’s and Europe’s hydropower plants aging, the relicensing of 16 GW of capacity presents a rare chance to modernize. Innovations like Natel’s FishSafe™ turbine ensures high fish survival without energy loss. With $127 billion needed for upgrades by 2030, investing in fish-friendly technology is a win-win for energy and conservation.
